SUBMISSION GUIDELINES, APA-CENTRAL DIV. SPSE SESSIONS, APRIL 17-18, 2008, CHICAGO, IL.

MESSAGE FROM SPSE PRESIDENT JASON HELFER RE: SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR APA-CENTRAL DIV. SPSE SESSIONS, APRIL 17-18, 2008, CHICAGO, IL.

The following topics have been selected for the sessions at the 2008 Spring APA conference in Chicago:

Thursday, April 17 – 5:15 p.m. -7:15 p.m. – Logic, Method, and Critical Thinking

Friday, April 18 – 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. – Ethics in and Beyond the Classroom

Below is a description of the format we will use. This information was obtained by and provided to SPSE by Professor Charles Howell of Northern Illinois University.

Each session will use the Octavian Discussion Format, by Dr. Peter Mitchell (Nobel Laureate Chemistry, 1978). This format facilitates the exchange of ideas on controversial subjects in a less confronting manner. The objective is to have an open discussion, allowing members of the audience to participate more fully. Needed are 8 seats at a discussion table, placed in the center of the room. The moderator then asks for responses from 3 to 4 invited discussants. After an initial round of comments, speakers/discussants may freely leave the table, while members of the audience may come up, sit in a vacant chair and wait to be recognized by the moderator. Only those seated at the table may speak. After one has had its say, one has to return to a seat in the audience. Only the moderator keeps a permanent seat at the table. These rules balance between enough structure to keep a focused, orderly discussion and room for spontaneity and self-organization in the "octalogue".

Thus, for each topic we will need the following:

A moderator/session organizer

4 discussants

Respondents

If you wish to be a discussant, please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words on or before January 15, 2008. The discussant abstracts will be peer-reviewed. If accepted, the "final" paper must be submitted to me no later than March 10, 2008. If you wish to be a respondent, please let me know and I will send out the accepted papers no later than March 15th, 2008. This should provide each respondent enough time to craft his or her comments. Final papers and responses may be submitted for inclusion in The Roundtable.

If your suggested session was not selected for inclusion, please consider submitting the topic as a symposium at the 2008 SPSE Fall conference. Also, please share this information with those who may be interested in these topics.

If you have any questions, please contact Jason Helfer at jhelfer@knox.edu
