History
and Rationale

History: In November of 2006 the Executive Board of the Society agreed
and voted unanimously through shared email communication with Alex Makedon
to institute a Newsletter, The Roundtable, in which to publish: (a)
papers presented during the annual SPSE sessions at the American Philosophical
Association-Central Division conferences; and (b) news items of interest
to the membership.
The Editor: The Executive Board asked Alex Makedon to serve
as editor-in-chief for a two year term (2006-08). Alex asked, in turn, Professors
Allan Johnston and Guillemette Johnston to serve as members of the first
editorial board. Both graciously accepted.
Editorial Board: The editor of The Roundtable is a member of
the Officers Board of the Society, elected to a two year term. The editor
is designated as "editor in chief" with the authority to select his or her
own editorial board.
Editorial Review Process: The editorial review process is intended
mainly to assist authors with editorial help, so authors can better express
their ideas the way they want to express them, not how we would have liked
them to, albeit always within the parameters of acceptable or "grammatically"
and orthographically "correct," exchange. In light of its self-described
assistive role, the editorial board works patiently and sensitively with
each author in making recommendations for revision, or to assist him
or her in completing all such revisions prior to publication.
Rationale: The reasons originally for establishing The Roundtable
were, firstly, to "capture" papers presented at the SPSE APA-Central sessions,
thus allowing our annual APA presenters an outlet for publishing their thoughts.
And secondly, to allow for a formal means of exchanging information of interest
to the membership, such as, recent publications, academic appointments, available
job openings or grants, and the like.
Nature of The Roundtable: No description would be complete
in philosophical circles without mentioning the "nature" of what is being
described. The Roundtable is an e-publication that can be edited,
revised, or otherwise altered at any time, in "real time," without the
traditional wait-time or expenses associated with a paper-based publication.
It was originally envisioned by Alex as a non-traditional publication that
could take the form, in his words, "more of an intelligent dinner
conversation, than formalized journal submission." Some of the greatest and
most innovative ideas occur when scholarship is balanced against informal
and "playful" exchange. The peer review process that contributors go through
is intended to assist them to submit the best possible paper, while providing
those who come in contact with such ideas, including our readers and the
editorial board itself, with an additional opportunity to rethink our thoughts,
and further sharpen our arguments. |
